What is Prom??

Prom, also known as a promenade dance, is a formal event held annually in high schools. It is a tradition that dates back to the late 19th century and has evolved over time. Initially, proms were exclusive to upper-class society and were considered debutante balls. However, the event has since become ubiquitous and has transformed into a right of passage for high schoolers in the United States. This year Marion Center is holding its prom at Chesnut Ridge Golf Resort on May 12th, 2023.
The first prom in the United States took place in the 1890s. It was a celebration for the graduating class of the prestigious Harvard University. In the beginning, prom was a more formal event, only open to members of a higher social class. It was considered a coming-of-age affair, signaling the transition from childhood to adulthood.
Prom evolved to include the middle-class society in the 1920s. Though less formal than previous events, the dress code was still stringent and enforced. It was mostly held in school gyms, and students danced to swing music and jazz. The popularity of prom grew, and by the 1950s, it had become a significant event in high schools across America.
Prom in the early 2000s:
Prom in the early 2000s was generally more formal than it is today. Dresses were full-length and flowing, and suits or tuxedos were the preferred attire for men. Dress codes were enforced by schools, and any violation of such rules would make students ineligible from attending.
Due to social media, early 2000s proms started to have an extravagant set-up. Themes became more elaborate, with ballroom decorations, red carpets, and even limousine arrivals. With social media, prom has become an event where everyone wants to look their best and show off their sense of style.
Prom Today:
Prom today is radically different from what it once was. Though the dress code still exists, the modern dress code has become more of a guideline rather than a rule. Prom-goers have started to flaunt cropped dresses and suits with vibrant colors. This change in dress code is possibly due to an emphasis on self-expression and individuality that has become more prevalent within society.
Social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook have forced a shift in prom as well. Each student wants to create their version of the perfect prom experience, leading to more elaborate themes, exotic locations, and over-the-top outfits.
Furthermore, schools have started to organize after-prom parties with a focus on safety. Prom is often viewed as a high-risk event as it is often associated with alcohol and drug use. As a result, many schools have sought to provide safe, alcohol-free alternatives. This has contributed to a shift to more budget-friendly events with a focus on safety and fun experience.
Prom is viewed differently by different people. While some see it as a critical period in a teenager’s life, symbolizing youth, innocence, and the end of an era, others criticize the event. For some, prom is seen as a waste of money, leading to financial strain for parents and students alike.
Additionally, the overemphasis on prom and its extravagance has been criticized by some, as it perpetuates an unhealthy cycle of consumerist practices. The exorbitant expense of the event has been seen as a form of social exclusion, which is contrary to the initial principle of prom being an inclusive event meant for everyone.
Conversely, supporters argue that prom is essential in promoting social connections and helping students interact with each other outside the class setting. It is seen as a right of passage and an event that promotes individuality and personal style.
Prom is a fascinating and evolving event. It has changed across the years, from an exclusive gathering to an inclusive event promoting individualism. The emphasis has shifted from a formal, upper-class event to a celebration of youth, leading to an explosion of creativity and self-expression. While it is viewed differently by different people, prom continues to have a significant emotional impact on students and is a hallmark tradition in high schools across the United States.
