Prom, also known as a promenade dance, is a formal event held annually in high schools. It is a tradition that dates back to the late 19th century and has evolved over time. This year Marion Center is holding its prom at Chesnut Ridge Golf Resort on May 12th, 2023.

In the beginning, prom was a more formal event, only open to members of a higher social class. It was considered a coming-of-age affair, signaling the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Prom Today:

This change in dress code is possibly due to an emphasis on self-expression and individuality that has become more prevalent within society.

Social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook have forced a shift in prom as well. Each student wants to create their version of the perfect prom experience, leading to more elaborate themes, exotic locations, and over-the-top outfits.

Furthermore, schools have started to organize after-prom parties with a focus on safety. Prom is often viewed as a high-risk event as it is often associated with alcohol and drug use. As a result, many schools have sought to provide safe, alcohol-free alternatives. This has contributed to a shift to more budget-friendly events with a focus on safety and fun experience.
