Book Review: Keeper of the Lost Cities

“What I’m trying to realize is that it’s okay to be different. If everyone were the same, we’d all make the same mistakes. Instead, we all face our own things, and that’s not so bad because we have people who care about us to help us through.” -Sophie Foster

Did you enjoy the Harry Potter series? What about the Percy Jackson books? If you’ve been searching for the next great fantasy series, it’s here!

Keeper of the Lost Cities, a series by Shannon Messenger is my favorite book series of all time. It’s full of action and epic cliffhangers!

Keeper of the Lost Cities follows the story of a girl named Sophie Foster. She’s always been different. She was a telepath or someone who could read minds. She always thought she was the only one.

One day, Sophie meets Fitz Vacker, a mysterious boy with impossibly teal eyes and a strange accent. He can read minds too! He tells Sophie the truth about who she is and why she’s always felt so different from everyone else.

“‘We’re not human Sophie,’” Fitz tells her, and he’s right. They’re not. They’re elves.

Sophie moves into the Lost Cities, where all the other elves live. She starts school at Foxfire, the elves’ most prestigious academy. She is placed under the care of two kind but seemingly fragile elves, Grady and Edaline Reuwen. At first, fitting in is a bit of a struggle, but soon, Sophie has a tight circle of friends: Fitz, who first found her, his little sister Biana who loves glitter and fancy dresses, Jensi Babblos, a friendly Foxfire student who befriended Sophie on her first day, Marella Redek, a petite girl who loves to gossip, Dex Dizznee, a creative boy who loves the weird and inevitable, and the fan-favorite, Keefe Sencen, a typical goofball who can joke about anything.

Things start going wrong. Sophie finds herself caught up between rebellions, her guardians, Grady and Edaline have denied her adoption, and she’s gotten into a fight with her friends. Just when it seems like things can’t get any worse, Sophie and Dex are kidnapped by black-cloaked rebels.

Escape seems impossible.

Keeper of the Lost Cities is currently a ten-book series, and fans are awaiting the release of the next book. The order of the series is: Keeper of the Lost Cities, Exile, Everblaze, Neverseen, Lodestar, Nightfall, Flashback, Legacy, Unlocked, and Stellarlune.

Action, adventure, drama, rebellion, and betrayals. Keeper of the Lost Cities has it all.
