In my opinion, there should be less homework. The reason why I think that there should be less homework is that excessive amounts of homework can be destructive to a child’s mental, and physical health. Having overloads of homework could also lead to stress and anxiety. I believe that teachers should give less homework. Some students do sports, have a job outside of school, and have other responsibilities to do that’s outside of school. Also, you would have more free time at home to do what you need to do. Like taking care of your pets, yourself, etc. Reducing homework has proven that students could get more sleep and homework doesn’t always make students achieve things.
Ethan Martin, a 7th grader said in an interview, “ I agree that there should be less homework. The reason why I agree with having less homework is because there is too much homework to begin with. It was originally supposed to be a punishment.” Roberto Nevilis, who was a teacher in Venice, Italy in 1905 invented homework for those who didn’t demonstrate a good understanding of the lessons taught during class as a punishment.
Olivia Buford, an 8th grader said in an interview, “I don’t think we should have as much homework because the only teachers who mostly assign homework are the math teachers, and it takes a lot of the free time that you have at home to do homework. It’s not so great knowing that you have homework to work on when you get home. When you’re at home, you have to work on the days you do have homework or don’t get it done during STAR.”
There is the After School Tutoring Program even though it’s only for 7 and 8th there should be days where it should be for Senior High ( 9-12 ) as well. There are people in Senior High who are also involved in extracurricular activities, like basketball, cheer, wrestling, swimming, etc. They also could have a really busy schedule, meaning they would go home, have to work on homework, and get to bed a lot later, then have to get up for school the next day. Then we have STAR, that’s another time where homework could get done, or even Study Hall but that’s only if you’re not in Band or Choir. If you’re in Band and Choir you wouldn’t have the Study Hall to complete or get help on homework.
