Some schools use a system where they go cyber on snow days. Other schools add on the missed days to the end of the year. What about Marion Center? We use a system where the days are already added in. In my opinion, our current system is great but what about other schools’ systems for snow days?
I have gone to different schools that use various systems. One of the schools did use a system where they added snow days to the end of the year. I find this unfair to the students because that last bit of time that was added on, is just spent sitting around doing nothing. Most grades have already been set and there aren’t very many assignments left. It’s also unfair to the teachers. On the extra days, they are basically just babysitting when they could be spending time with their own children and families. This was one of my least favorite systems but the cyber system is just cruel.
At another school I went to, either after a certain amount of snow days or on the snow days, you would attend cyber school. No one wants to be there. The students could be enjoying the freshly made snow and enjoy just being a kid but schools still make them attend cyber school. I understand that there is quality school time that could be spent, but it’s just plain cruel to both the students and teachers. The teachers could be watching their kids have fun, spending time with family and friends, or just enjoying the day off. Instead, they are stuck trying to teach with all the problems of the internet such as bad wifi, camera or audio not working, computers not working, there are various problems.
Throughout all the schools I’ve gone to, this was the only school I’ve seen that added in the days initially. It’s a win-win for both the school and the students. The students get to relax and enjoy themselves and don’t have to make up extra days. It’s better for both teacher and student mental health. Teachers can catch up on online grading or just relax. Students have the opportunity to catch up on missing assignments and recharge. Overall, one of the best systems I have seen.
