Since I was little, I wanted to play trombone in my school’s band. I was so excited in fifth grade when I was finally old enough to join band. I’ve been playing trombone for almost three years now. I’ve never regretted joining band. It’s provided me with so many opportunities, such as learning to play french horn as a secondary instrument and getting to be in Marching Band. I would recommend band to everyone. It’s a lot of hard work, but if you stick with it, it’s really rewarding. I did a little research and put together a list of ten reasons why you should join band.
- Children who are exposed to music are more likely to have stronger language skills.
- Emotional growth also benefits from music. Music provides a unique way for students to express themselves. Music students tend to have a higher self-esteem, as well as are better at dealing with anxiety.
- Music can also benefit social skills. Students in band have lots of opportunities to make new friends and get to know their classmates (and maybe kids in other grades) better.
- Joining band is a great way to boost your confidence. You will be performing in front of your classmates, as well as live audiences. While it may sound scary, once you get up on the stage, it’s really exciting.
- Band will improve your hand-eye coordination and help develop fine motor skills.
- Joining band will improve your math skills. On a certain level, music and math really tie together (time signatures, beats per minute, etc.)
- Band also gives you a level of commitment not many other school activities will. Band students will often spend their STAR periods in the band room, experimenting with other instruments and practicing with friends or on their own in one of the practice rooms. To be successful in band, it takes a lot of time and practice, but in the end it feels really rewarding.
- Studies show that band students often do better on tests.
- Band provides lots of opportunities. Many students who participate in concert band also are a part of Marching Mand. Other opportunities include, jazz band, Band Fest, County Band, District Band, etc. In high school, there are opportunities to compete in PMEA district band, where you will have the opportunity to go on to Regional Band, then states, and perhaps even further.
- Joining band can boost your creativity. Band can help students express themselves, which can lead to thinking outside the box and looking at the world in different ways.
As you can see, there are many benefits to joining band. It’s a really fun and rewarding experience to be a part of something like band. I hope you consider putting it on your schedule for next year!
