On May 9th, the Marion Center ATHENA Club had the privilege to go to the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh to explore their new room, the Woman’s Place room, filled with women who helped shape Pittsburgh.
ATHENA Club is an international organization made to help empower women and girls to be leaders and take their leadership skills to the next level. The MC ATHENA Club has been working hard all year to develop leadership and influence the school, they hosted the orange out for Teen Dating Awareness Month, and the teal out for Sexual Assault Awareness Month and put on multiple bake sales throughout the school year. The club went to Pittsburgh to learn more about women’s leadership roles in making Pittsburgh the steel city it is today.
Mrs. Stadler, the ATHENA Club advisor said, “The Marion Center Athena Club traveled to Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh to view the exhibit ‘A Woman’s Place: How Women Shaped Pittsburgh.’ The trip was an excellent opportunity to see just how much of an impact the women of our area had on so many of the things that we often take for granted today. We toured a huge array of exhibits containing artifacts that showcased the tremendous contributions women made to improve every facet of our society, all while breaking gender barriers to do so. Viewing the exhibit reinforced the purpose of the Athena Club, which is to support and empower young women to enable them to take on leadership roles in their school and community so that they can make the changes they want to see in their world.”
The ATHENA Club had a very productive year, and ended the year with celebrating the women leaders all throughout western Pennsylvania. Empowering young women to take on leadership rules is what the ATHENA club is all about, taking the trip helped the club understand the importance and effect women’s leadership can make on society.
