On November 21, a group of members of the junior and senior high choirs at Marion Center Junior Senior High School took a bus to Indiana Junior High School for this year’s county choir festival.
The students at this festival ranged from grades 7-12. School’s throughout Indiana County participated.
County choir is a great opportunity for students to grow as musicians, learn new things, and meet new people.
For county choir, the students rehearsed all day in order to prepare for their concert in the evening. Two separate ensembles, a treble choir and a bass choir, got to perform for an audience of their friends, families, and community members that night.
At 7:00, the bass choir kicked off the concert. Many of their songs were about pirates and the ocean. Following the bass choir’s performance, the treble choir took the stage for their concert. Just as the bass choir did, they performed four of their own songs. The treble choir performed a large variety of songs ranging from a syncopated, jazzy song, “Mary Had a Little Blues,” and “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta my Hair,” a song from the Broadway musical, South Pacific. To wrap up the night, the bass choir returned to the stage to join the treble choir for a special combined number, which is a tradition for Indiana County Choir.
A big shout out to Brooklyn Slovinsky, Clarissa Adkins, and Clark McKee, percussionists from Marion Center, who did an outstanding job on a percussion accompaniment for the song, “Lineage”.
It was a great performance, and you could tell the students had worked hard during the long hours of rehearsals throughout the day.
The next day, students in grades 7-9 took a bus to Dubois Middle School for Jr. District Choir. Many of the schools throughout the region participated in this festival. Once again, the students got to experience and make new friends.
Participating students worked hard and pushed through during long rehearsal hours in order to perform an exciting concert in the evening.
Just like for county choir, there was a separate bass and treble choir with special guest conductors.
To start off the concert, the bass choir took to the stage and performed an outstanding performance. They performed a great variety of songs, from a sad ballad to a modern pop song.
Following the bass choir’s performance, the treble choir performed their concert. They sang a range of styles of music, however, many of the songs talked about nature. They performed “Pure Imagination”, a crowd pleaser from the movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
To wrap up the concert, the bass choir came back to the stage for a combined number, “Music Changes the World.”
It was another outstanding concert, and at the end, the performers received a standing ovation from the audience.
Music festivals like these are great opportunities for students to demonstrate their skills, learn new things, and participate in groups with students from many schools.
