Mary Poppins is a very well-known classic. However, while many people have seen the movie – and maybe even its sequel which came out several years ago – the book does not seem as well known.
Mary Poppins was published in 1934 by an Australian-British writer, P. L. Travers. However, it was originally written as a short story in 1926.
Mary Poppins will take you back in time to Edwardian London, England in the 1900s. In this book, you will join the Banks children in their house on Cherry Tree Lane as they learn to embrace their imaginations and learn valuable life lessons from their nanny, Mary Poppins.
In the book, after the Banks children’s nanny leaves, their mother puts out a request for a new nanny. Mary Poppins then comes to serve as a nanny for the four Banks children – Jane, Micheal, John, and Barabra. Throughout the book, Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical adventures.
Mary Poppins is a strong believer in good behavior and disciplines the children. She could also be described as vain. She is definitely full of magic though. She can slide down banisters, step into pictures, talk to animals, and stick paper stars onto the sky.
Mary Poppins is a good book for a wide range of ages. It is known as a children’s classic, however, it can be enjoyed by people of any age.
Between the publication of Mary Poppins, and 1988, P. L. Travers wrote several other books featuring the character, Mary Poppins.
In 1964, Disney released the movie Mary Poppins, which has taken its place as a classic. This musical starred Julie Andrews, who perfectly captures the personality of Mary Poppins. This movie also features the well-known actor, Dick Van Dyke, who plays the role of the chimney sweep. The musical is full of fun, memorable songs that have become very popular throughout the years. In 2018, a new musical, entitled Mary Poppins Returns, was released by Disney. A show featuring the story of Mary Poppins was also performed on Broadway for several years.
If you’ve seen the movie and enjoyed it, you should definitely try the book! I would recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a fun, lighthearted classic to read.
