Cheer open gyms are a great way to get involved, practice, and improve your skills! For junior high students, open gyms are every Tuesday from 5:30–7:00 PM, while varsity cheerleaders have sessions on Monday and Tuesday from 6:30–8:00 PM.
We start each session with stretches, which are essential for becoming more flexible. You don’t need any equipment or mats—just your body and willingness to stretch in different ways. Flexibility is a big part of cheer leading, along with having a loud, confident voice and being ready to participate fully.
Our coaches, Coach April and Coach Kelly, are here to help you learn the ropes and improve your cheer skills. Cheer leading is one of the longest sports of the year because we cheer at football games, basketball games, and also compete as part of a competition team for students in grades 9–12.
On your first day, you’ll usually start with learning the basic motions that you’ll use throughout the season. Cheer leading requires effort in many ways—jumping, tumbling, stunting, and more. It’s a sport that builds strength, coordination, and teamwork. While some people might think cheer is “just cheering,” it actually takes dedication and athletic ability to excel.
Cheer leading isn’t just about skills—it’s also about making long-lasting friendships and memories. Working together, cheering at games, and supporting each other creates bonds that last far beyond the season.
This year, we hope to see even more students join us! Remember what our coaches always say: “A good cheerleader is not measured by the height of her jumps but by the span of her spirit.” Come out to open gyms, give it a try, and you might discover that cheer leading is even more fun, exciting, and rewarding than you imagined!
